[table][tr][td][font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][size=12px]With the magnitude of the May 12 earthquake now revised up to 8.0, latest figures report more than 65,000 people killed and 23,000 still missing, with over eleven million homeless.

Red Cross is the only organisation – besides the government agencies – currently engaged in disaster response activities on a nationwide scale in China. More than 35,000 local Red Cross volunteers continue to provide first aid and relief supplies. Red Cross volunteers are also providing shelter to thousands of people left homeless by the earthquake. More than 100 relief and medical teams have been mobilized by Red Cross to support rescue and medical operations, and to date, over 800,000 survivors have received assistance from Red Cross. h N^4R6^8{+P#p

Transitional shelter is in great need while plans are made for the reconstruction of permanent housing and infrastructure, which is expected to take three years. Australian Red Cross has offered a disaster preparedness aid worker and two disaster response team water modules, as we gear up to make a major contribution to the global Red Cross call for 100,000 tents. @&\;fz(I't&`D&i"b

Latest government figures suggest the 7.8-magnitude earthquake which devastated the south-western province of Sichuan on 12 May has left more than 65,000 dead, 360,000 injured and more than 5 million homeless. More than 23,000 people are still missing while roads are blocked as aftershocks hamper relief efforts.

It is estimated that local communities will need to stay in temporary shelter for up to one year in some of the hardest hit areas. In addition to the global tent drive, Red Cross plans to set up a field hospital and temporary schools, which could last for six to 12 months, to serve the needs of the local community until more permanent structures are built.
